Tai Po

Often seen as another sprawling “New Town” development, with little of interest from before the 1970s and 1980s, Tai Po offers a surprising amount of historical interest.

A significant market town in pre-European times, and centre for pottery manufacture from Ming times, the British flag was raised in 1899 in Tai Po after the lease was signed on what became the New Territories.

Several old buildings remain from the early years of British rule, connections to the Chinese past continue into the present, and the town itself rewards detailed exploration.
