Sham Shui Po Wet Market
Fresh-produce markets – popularly known as “Wet Markets” abound in Hong Kong. Some are municipal markets with everything under one roof – others are located along the street-side. In Shamshuipo one of the most popular – around Ap Liu and Pei Ho Streets, combined the best of both.
Shamshuipo is one of the older, and more “authentic” residential districts in Kowloon and an exploration of its market streets is always a revelation. Long-established shops and small businesses completely contradict the generic, “High Street Anywhere” soullessness found in more modernized parts of the city. There is no need for “urban revitalization” in Shamshuipo – this perennially-fascinating place is completely vital just the way it is.
On this exploration we will visit a number of produce stalls and learn how thousands of Hong Kong people, every day of the year, transform various fresh and dry ingredients into tasty, economical family meals.
Fish and seafood, poultry, meat, dried foodstuffs, herbals and medicinals, fruit and vegetables will all be explored. Sourcing, provenance, weights and measures, hygiene and other common issues and concerns will all be discussed and evaluated.
Easy-to-follow recipes for a few basic, delicious home-style Cantonese dishes will be distributed to participants.
We will finish our exploration at the cooked-food stalls on the top floor of Pei Ho Street Market to enjoy a welcome cup of tea.
